STUNNING AUSTRALIAN YELLOW BOX BURL CAP - 17 X 14 X 3
THE PERFECT PIECE FOR YOUR NEXT TURNING PROJECT
This burl cap has been air drying for 5+ years, in a temperature-controlled, low light space to an average moisture of around 20%.  Longest dimensions are approx. 17" x 14" and thickness is around 3" at the peak.
Cut side has been hand planed flat & sanded smooth after wax removal.
Cut side has been wetted with a water/denatured mixture to show the figure; image with moisture meter shows slab when dry. Bark is mostly removed. There are some large cracks & checks (as shown in images). Largest crack measures around 2.25 inches unbroken, full length is 5", but can be easily filled (close up shown in final image). The Color may be off due to screen differences. For color reference, first image was taken in direct morning sunlight & index card included for white balance/color reference. All other photos were taken in midday shade on a sunny day.
Yellow Box Burls are harvested in southeastern Australia from medium to tall trees in the Eucalyptus family. Lumber is harvested and used for outdoor projects such as fence posts and bridge parts. It is pink to gold to brown in color and very heavy, dense, and rot resistant. Notably, the eucalyptus melliodora was one amongst the few trees to survive the blast from the 6 August 1945 atomic bombing of Hiroshima.
Yellow Box lumber is not very popular for woodworking, but the burls are prized for their unique figure and color. These burl growths can be harvested from living trees sustainably.

Please dont hesitate to ask any questions you may have. I have a large supply of Australian Burls & Live Edge Slabs, all air dried to fairly low moisture percentages & stored in a controlled setting. Most of them were imported with the intention of using them for clocks.  More listings to come
