2008 TITAN T-51D MUSTANG, 80 TT, 4.5 SNEW LS3 V-8, 4.5 SINCE INSTALL, NOW FAIRLY HURT. CHEAP!THE T-51 IS A ¾ SCALE REPLICA OF THE FAMOUS P-51D MUSTANG!
THE T-51 IS A 2 SEAT, DUAL CONTROL EXPERIMENTAL AMATUER BUILT AIRPLANE, CONSTRUCTED OF ALUMINUM, ASSEMBLED MOSTLY WITH BLIND (POP) RIVITS INTO A LIGHTWEIGHT AIRPLANE CAPABLE OF +6 -4 G AEROBATIC MANUEVERS AND 210 MPH + CRUISE SPEED AND 3,000+ FEET PER MINUTE CLIMB!
ORIGINALLY DESIGNED BY JOHN WILLIAMS, THE OWNER OF TITAN AIRCRAFT AND A SERIAL AIRCRAFT DESIGNER, THE T-51 WAS INTENDED AS A PLAYTHING FOR HIMSELF, USING A ROTAX 912 100 H.P. ENGINE.
SEVERAL AIRCRAFT WERE BUILT AND FLOWN WITH THIS ENGINE BEFORE BUILDERS AND PROSPECTIVE OWNERS, REALIZING THAT THIS WELL MADE, FANTASTIC LOOKING AIRPLANE, WITH GOOD FLIGHT AND HANDLING CHARECTERISTICS WAS RIPE FOR THE INSTALLATION OF MORE HORSEPOWER!
THE ORIGINAL MUSTANG WAS OF COURSE A SINGLE SEATER. THERE ARE SEVERAL THAT HAVE BEEN CONVERTED WITH THE ADDITION OF A SMALL JUMP SEAT BEHIND THE PILOT, BUT THIS POSITION OFFERS NO CONTROLS FOR THE REAR SEATER, THEY ARE STUCK IN THERE, JUST RIDING.
THE VERY FEW DUAL CONTROL MUSTANGS (TF-51D)2 IN EXISTANCE ?? ARE USED TO CHECK OUT PROSPECTIVE P-51 PILOTS AND ARE NOT PRIVATELY OWNED.
SO IN MANY WAYS, THE T-51 MAKES MORE SENSE TO MANY WELL-HEELED (BUT NOT ,000,000, SINGLE SEAT WARBIRD HEELED) PILOTS AND OWNERS!
AS A RESULT, THE LOWLY 100 H.P. MOTORS FIRST INSTALLED ARE BEING REPLACED IN THESE EARLY AIRPLANES WITH LARGER, MORE POWERFUL ENGINES OF A VARIETY AND SIZE.
WHILE THE HONDA V-6 WAS THE HOT TICKET FOR A SHORT TIME, THE CURRENT DARLING IS THE G.M. ALL ALUMINUM LS3 MOTOR, WHICH IS RATED AT 430 H.P. BUT DERATED FOR THIS INSTALLATION AT 300 H.P. AT 4,000 RPM (THE ENGINE DRIVES A PSRU, PROP SPEED REDUCTION UNIT, WHICH REDUCES THE PROP SPEED TO THE REQUIRED 2,500-2,700 PROP RPM).
THIS AIRCRAFT IS ONE OF THE UNITS THAT WAS BUILT AND FLOWN WITH THE ROTAX 912, FOR A TOTAL OF 75.5 HOURS, AT WHICH TIME THE JOHN WILLIAMS AND HIS EXPERIENCED TEAM AT TITAN INSTALLED THE ,500 (PLUS OPTIONS) LS3 CONVERSION TO THIS AIRPLANE.
THE CONVERSION WAS SIGNED OFF 5/15/2021, JUST 4 MONTHS AGO!
LAST ANNUAL WAS PERFORMED 5/20/2021.
JOHN WILLIAMS HIMSELF SIGNED THE LOGBOOK 6/8/2021 AFTER THE TEST FLIGHTS WITH THE NEW ENGINE INSTALLED WENT WELL, INCLUDING LOOPS, SPINS AND ROLLS!
JOHN IS A VERY EXPERIENCED PILOT AND CFI, WITH HUNDREDS (THOUSANDS?) OF HOURS IN THESE PLANES, WITHOUT AN ISSUE.
THE PROBLEM SEEMED TO HAVE OCCURRED WHEN THE NEW OWNER WAS PILOT IN COMMAND.
THE INFORMATION I RECEIVED WAS FUZZY, BUT IT APPEARS THAT THE AIRCRAFT VEERED OFF THE SIDE OF THE RUNWAY DURING TAKEOFF AND STRUCK TREES.
JUST LIKE THE REAL MUSTANG, WHO’S ACCIDENT RECORD, ESPECIALLY IN TRAINING, IS RUMERED TO BE AS HIGH AS IT’S KILL RECORD, THIS VERY HIGH PERFORMANCE VARIANT HAS A HIGH PROBABILITY OF TORQUE ROLLS AT LOW SPEED, MAKING THE AIRPLANE DIFFICULT TO CONTROL AT LOW SPEED AND HIGH POWER SETTINGS.
NOT A PROBLEM FOR AN EXPERIENCED PILOT, OR ONE THAT REMEMBERS HOW HARD A HIGH PERFORMANCE AIRPLANE CAN BITE!
NOT AN ISSUE WITH THE T-51, EVEN WITH THE EXTRA POWER. BUT IT JUST DIDN’T WORK OUT WELL FOR THIS OWNER ON THIS FLIGHT.
ACTUALLY, IT JUST DIDN’T WORK OUT SO WELL FOR THE AIRPLANE, THE OWNER IS FINE!
THE AIRCRAFT IS SERIOUSLY HURT, AS YOU CAN SEE!
BUT NOT ALL IS DESTROYED!
THE NEW ENGINE, WITH 4.5 HOURS SINCE INSTALL, APEARS 100% UNDAMAGED!
THE TUBULAR ENGINE MOUNT IS DENTED ON THE RIGHT SIDE BUT INTACT, AND ALL OF THE SPECIAL ENGINE MODIFICATIONS REQUIRED TO INCREASE THE CONVERSION FROM THE ,000 ENGINE ONLY PRICE TO THE ,000 CONVERSION PRICE (WITH THE EXCEPTION OF THE RADIATOR, POSSIBLY DAMAGED BUT ALL THERE) AND THE DAMAGED PROPELLOR, ARE INTACT.
THIS AIRCRAFT IS SOLD WITHOUT AVIONICS, BUT COMPLETE FROM (DAMAGED) PROPELLOR TO TAIL OTHERWISE.
I CAN ONLY PRESUME THAT THE OWNER OF AN ORIGINAL ROTAX POWERED T-51 OR A KIT OWNER WHO IS STILL BUILDING THEIR AIRPLANE WOULD BE EXCITED TO HAVE THIS 4.5 HOUR SINCE NEW ENGINE AND INSTALLATION, PLUS THE WHOLE AIRPLANE, WITH IT’S MYRIAD OF USEABLE PARTS!
THE MAIN LANDING GEAR (HEAVY DUTY OPTION) SEEMS TO HAVE HELD UP WELL, AS THE MOUNTS INSIDE THE WINGS FAILED, NOT THE TRUNIONS, WHEELS OR BRAKES.
AFTER YOU REMOVE THE LS3 CONVERSION STUFF, I KNOW THAT THE REMAINDER OF THE FUSELAGE WILL BE VALUABLE AS SET DRESSING, “LAWN ORNAMENT”, PAINTBALL FIELD PROP, ETC.
I AM SELLING THIS AIRPLANE WITH THE ONE COMBINED LOGBOOK, AS WELL AS THE FAA BILL OF SALE AND FAA AIRWORTHINESS CERTIFICATE.
I SELL LOTS OF REBUILDABLE AIRPLANES ON EBAY, BUT WOULD NOT PRESUME TO PUT THIS AIRCRAFT IN THAT CATEGORY, BUT THE KIT IS IN CURRENT PRODUCTION, PARTS ARE AVAILABLE, AND BUILDING FROM SCRATCH IS REPORTED TO TAKE 1,600 HOURS. REBUILDING WOULD OF COURSE TAKE LESS.
